WE'RE GOING TO KIND OF FILL YOU IN JUST A LITTLE BIT. Y'ALL. Y'ALL HAVE HEARD SOME US TALK ABOUT THAT A LITTLE BIT. AND ESTHER TALK TO YOU ALL ABOUT IT.

BUT THEN ALSO YOUR ROLE IN THIS AS WELL. BECAUSE THERE ARE THINGS THAT YOU WILL BE VOTING ON AND DOING TAKING ACTION ITEMS ON WITH CONSENT.

AND SO YOU NEEDED TO KNOW THIS PIECE SO THAT WE CAN KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

AND THAT'LL START ON OCTOBER 20TH AT OUR NEXT BOARD MEETING.

WE ARE GOING TO CHAT ABOUT THE DISTRICT LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE, HOW THESE THINGS KIND OF IMPACT THE WORK THAT YOU ALL DO AS A SCHOOL BOARD, AND THEN HOW BOOKS ARE COLLECTED JUST A LITTLE BIT. WE'RE GOING TO TOUCH ON THAT. OKAY.

JUST KIND OF START RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE. WE DO HAVE 75 CERTIFIED SCHOOL LIBRARIANS.

WE HAVE 43 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARIANS, 19 MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARIANS, AND 12 HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARIANS.

AND OUR CENTRAL OFFICE TEAM IS STAFFED WITH THESE FOLKS RIGHT HERE.

WE HAVE A PURCHASER. WE HAVE MYSELF. AND THEN I HAVE TWO COORDINATORS THAT WORK WITH ME, AND THAT'S RELEVANT TO OUR PROCUREMENT PROCESS. WE'LL KIND OF GO INTO THAT HERE SHORTLY.

HAVE YOU HEARD COMMONLY SAID, OH, THEY'RE A CERTIFIED SCHOOL LIBRARIAN. AND YOU'RE LIKE, WHY ARE YOU SAYING SO MANY WORDS? THAT DOESN'T. WHY IS BECAUSE CERTIFIED SCHOOL LIBRARIANS ARE DIFFERENT THAN JUST A SCHOOL LIBRARIAN. A CERTIFIED SCHOOL LIBRARIAN HAS A MASTER'S DEGREE, TWO YEARS MINIMUM OF CLASSROOM TEACHING EXPERIENCE.

THEY HAVE COMPLETED THE STATE APPROVED LIBRARIAN PREP PROGRAM, AND THEY HAVE PASSED THEIR EXAM TO BE ABLE TO BE A CERTIFIED SCHOOL LIBRARIAN.

FRISCO ISD ONLY HIRES CERTIFIED SCHOOL LIBRARIANS ONLY.

AND THEY ARE. WE ARE RARE IN THAT, AND I TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN THAT.

A FUN FACT MOST LIBRARIANS WERE TEACHERS. THEY HAD TO BE A TEACHER TO EARN THEIR DEGREE.

RIGHT? AND FRISCO ISD THE AVERAGE TEACHING EXPERIENCE OF A LIBRARIAN IS TEN YEARS.

SO MOST OF THE LIBRARIANS IN FRISCO ISD HAVE BEEN TEACHERS TEN YEARS PRIOR TO BECOMING A SCHOOL LIBRARIAN.

SO THEY'RE VERY, VERY INSTRUCTIONALLY HEAVY AND DRIVEN.

OKAY. I MEAN, WHEN YOU THINK BACK TO LIBRARIES WHEN YOU WERE A KID, DID YOU PULL OUT THAT CARD CATALOG? I KNOW YOU DID, LIKE THE BIG DRAWER, AND YOU, LIKE, FLIP THROUGH LIBRARIES DON'T LOOK LIKE THAT ANYMORE. AND I KNOW THAT YOU ALL KNOW OUR COMMUNITY THAT'S HERE. YOUR KIDDOS THAT GO TO FRISCO SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES LOOK LIKE THIS NOW.

THEY'RE VERY DIFFERENT. THEY'RE VERY SUPPORTIVE OF CURRICULUM.

WE DO BOOKS, YES, BUT THAT'S ONE SMALL PIECE OF A VERY, VERY LARGE PIE.

OKAY. SO WE'RE GOING TO GET RIGHT ON INTO THE PROCESSES THAT WE HAVE CREATED HERE IN FRISCO ISD IN 2021.

QUICKLY CHAT ABOUT. WE GOT A LOT OF COMMUNITY FEEDBACK IN 2021, WHICH SEEMS LIKE A VERY LONG TIME AGO.

AND FROM THAT FEEDBACK, OUR DISTRICT TOOK ACTION.

RIGHT. WE PUT A LOT OF PROCESSES IN PLACE. WE IMMEDIATELY STARTED MAKING CHANGES TO OUR COLLECTION GUIDELINES, WHICH IS KIND OF HOW LIBRARIANS DO THEIR BOOK PURCHASING AND CURATING PROCESS.

WE THEN TOOK THOSE UPDATED COLLECTION GUIDELINES AND THEN REVIEWED EVERY SINGLE LIBRARY BOOK IN THE ENTIRE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

IT TOOK US AN ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR TO DO THAT WORK.

THAT ACTUALLY, THAT INFORMATION IS STILL AVAILABLE ON THE LIBRARY SERVICES WEBSITE. IF YOU WANTED TO KIND OF DIG INTO THAT. IT WAS A VERY, VERY HARD WORK. HOWEVER, IT WAS VERY, VERY BENEFICIAL AND VERY ACCURATE AND REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT OUR COMMUNITY WAS TELLING US THAT THEY WANTED TO SEE.

WE ALSO WORKED WITH OUR VENDORS AND IMPLEMENTED WHAT WE CALL PARENT ENGAGEMENT PIECES.

AND WHAT'S REALLY UNIQUE ABOUT PARENT ENGAGEMENT PIECES AND WHY I WANTED TO POINT THAT OUT TO YOU ALL, IS WE WERE THE FIRST IN THE STATE OF TEXAS TO IMPLEMENT THESE COMPONENTS.

WE GOT WITH DIFFERENT COMPANIES, AND WE BUILT THESE PROCESSES SO THAT WE COULD IMPLEMENT THOSE WITH OUR PARENTS AND ENCOURAGE TRANSPARENCY, BUT ALSO INVOLVEMENT WITH WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN LIBRARY SERVICES.

AND SO WHEN WE GET INTO SENATE BILL 13 HERE IN A SECOND, YOU'RE GOING TO THINK, DANG, THAT SOUNDS REALLY FAMILIAR.

THAT'S BECAUSE THE STATE OF TEXAS USED OUR DISTRICT TO BUILD A LOT OF THEIR PROCESSES, BECAUSE WE WERE ALREADY SEVERAL STEPS YEARS EVEN AHEAD OF WHERE THEY WERE HEADED.

SO WE IMPLEMENTED PARENT EMAIL NOTIFICATION. WE HAVE A PROHIBITED LIST FEATURE, WHICH BASICALLY PROVIDES A PARENT AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO IN AND SAY,

I'M NOT QUITE READY FOR MY KIDDO TO READ THAT BOOK YET.

LET'S PAUSE. SO WHEN KIDDO GOES INTO THE LIBRARY, SCANS THE BOOK TO CHECK IT OUT, IT KICKS BACK AND SAYS, NOT YET. PICK A DIFFERENT BOOK. AND THEN THEY GO AND SNAG A DIFFERENT BOOK.

IT'S GREAT. WE IT TOOK US A VERY LONG TIME TO BUILD THAT, BUT WE'RE VERY PROUD OF IT.

WE ALSO HAVE PUBLIC ACCESS TO OUR CATALOGS, AND WE ALSO PROVIDE PARENTS THE ABILITY TO LOG INTO THE CATALOG AND VIEW THEIR CHILD'S CHECKOUT HISTORY AT ANY TIME.

ALSO, THE FIRST IN THE STATE OF TEXAS TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT. OKAY.

SENATE BILL 13, IN ALL ITS GLORY. THIS SPECIFICALLY IS A LAW RELATING TO LIBRARY MATERIALS, ESTABLISHING A LOT OF DIFFERENT PROCESSES THAT WE ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE WITH THE ADDITION OF JUST A FEW.

ONE OF THOSE PROCESSES IS AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

THAT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT OF THE LAW. I THINK WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THAT AT THE BOARD MEETING AND IN THE PAST, IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT. IT IS SOMETHING THAT FRISCO ISD OPTED AND CHOSE TO MAKE THE DECISION TO HAVE.

WE FELT THAT OUR COMMUNITY WOULD HAVE A PREFERENCE FOR THAT, AND SO THAT IS THE PATH THAT WE TOOK.

SO TODAY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

SO IN ADDITION TO THE EXISTING PROCESSES THAT WE ALREADY HAVE, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE THAT ADVISORY COMMITTEE DOES PROVIDE INPUT OR FEEDBACK ON BOOK PURCHASING. THEY COLLABORATE WITH OUR DEPARTMENT ON RECONSIDERATIONS.

IF WE RECEIVE ANY BOOK CHALLENGES. AND WE ALSO DO A LOT OF LEARNING. THERE WILL BE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FROM THE MEMBERS OF THAT ADVISORY COMMITTEE. IF YOU WILL THINK LIKE FRIENDS HAS ANYBODY HEARD OF FRIENDS OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY BEFORE? THINK OF FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL LIBRARY THAT'S WHAT THIS COMMITTEE IS WORKING WITH US ON. WE'RE VERY EXCITED TO HAVE INVOLVEMENT FROM OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND FROM PARENTS WHO REALLY ARE EXCITED ABOUT LIBRARY SERVICES. SO THAT'S KIND OF THAT'S THE PROGRESS.

AND I THINK OUR NEXT SLIDE IS THE PURPOSE OF THAT ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

THEIR PURPOSE IS TO SUPPORT THE LIBRARY SERVICES DEPARTMENT. WE, AS WE JUST PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED HAVE WORKED REALLY, REALLY HARD TO KIND OF TAILOR FIT THIS PROCESS AND WORKFLOW AND THINGS THAT ARE RESPONSIVE TO WHAT OUR COMMUNITY WANTS TO SEE FOR THEIR KIDDOS IN FRISCO ISD.

AND SO WE FEEL VERY CONFIDENT THAT OUR EXISTING PROCESSES ARE EXACTLY WHERE THEY NEED TO BE AND LOOK FORWARD TO COLLABORATING WITH THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MOVING FORWARD ON THOSE SAME PROCESSES. THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE, THEY MEET WITH US EVERY, I THINK IT'S SEVEN MEETINGS ISH.

SO YOU GUYS WILL NOT RECEIVE A LIST FROM LIBRARY SERVICES.

EVERY SINGLE BOARD MEETING THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN.

YOU WILL RECEIVE IT FOR LIKE SIX OUT OF ALL OF YOUR BOARD MEETINGS.

THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBERS DO HAVE TO ATTEND.

THERE ARE SEVEN VOTING MEMBERS ACCORDING TO THE LAW, AND THERE ARE ADDITIONAL ADVISORY MEMBERS THAT ARE NON-VOTING MEMBERS THAT WERE RECOMMENDED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. OKAY. SO THIS IS THE EXCITING PART.

THIS IS THE PART THAT THIS IS LIKE THE THINGS THAT YOU GUYS GET TO DO.

SO NOW YOU'LL BE SUPER INFORMED. OKAY, SO WHAT YOU GUYS WILL RECEIVE IS THAT'S OKAY.

HERE'S OUR WORKFLOW. I JUST WANT YOU ALL TO HAVE AN IDEA, BECAUSE BY THE TIME WE DELIVER A LIST OF BOOKS TO YOU, I DON'T WANT YOU TO BE LIKE, HOLY MOLY, AMANDA, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THIS? SO FIRST, A CAMPUS LIBRARIAN CREATES A LIST OF BOOKS.

AND IT'S NOT JUST LIKE OUT OF THIN AIR. THEY DO RESEARCH, OKAY? THEY DO RESEARCH BECAUSE THAT'S PART OF WHAT THEY DO. THEY TAKE A LIST, OR THEY GO FIND A BOOK THAT A KID HAS EITHER ASKED FOR.

A TEACHER HAS SAID, OH, I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THIS BOOK IN MY CLASSROOM.

A KIDDO IS EXCITED ABOUT READING THE NEXT BOOK IN THE DOG MAN SERIES.

THERE ARE A VARIETY OF REASONS WHY A BOOK NEEDS TO BE PROCURED, SO A LIBRARIAN WILL MAKE A LIST.

SHE REVIEWS THAT LIST AND SHE REVIEWS IT WITH PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS, VERY SPECIFIC PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS, NOT JUST ANY RUN OF THE MILL BLOG. OKAY, VERY SPECIFIC PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS.

SHE ALSO GOES AND FINDS MORE WHAT WE WOULD CALL INFORMAL.

SO WE'RE LOOKING FOR A REALLY WELL-ROUNDED UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THAT PARTICULAR BOOK IS ABOUT AND WHO IT IS INTENDED FOR.

SO ONCE SHE CREATES THAT LIST, SHE DOES THIS AGAIN IN A LOOP UNTIL SHE HAS ABOUT 25 OR 30 TITLES.

THEN SHE WILL SEND THAT TO THE CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF THAT'S MYSELF AND MY TEAM.

AND THEN WE'RE GO BACK THROUGH THAT LIST EVERY SINGLE TITLE AND CONFIRM THE PROFESSIONAL REVIEW IS INDICATIVE OF AN APPROPRIATE CAMPUS LEVEL AND AGE LEVEL. WE LOOK FOR THINGS CALLED AGE BANDS, SO WE SPECIFICALLY HAVE TO SEE A GRADE OR AGE IN THAT IN THAT PROFESSIONAL REVIEW, OR IT CANNOT BE COLLECTED, AMONG OTHER THINGS. THERE ARE A VARIETY OF THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO COMPLY WITH BEFORE PROCURING A LIBRARY MATERIAL.

IT IS A VERY TIME CONSUMING PROCESS, BUT THEY LOVE IT AND I LOVE IT.

HOWEVER, IT IS NOT JUST KIND OF YEAH, WILLY NILLY, FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD.

SO ONCE THOSE TITLES ARE REVIEWED BY CENTRAL OFFICE, WE MOVE ON TO STEP THREE, WHICH IS WHERE NEW MATERIALS ARE POSTED TO THE FISD WEBSITE FOR COMMUNITY FEEDBACK. SO SB 13 REQUIRES THAT ANY BOOK THAT IS NEW TO OUR CATALOG, AND THAT'S A RELEVANT COMPONENT.

A BOOK DOES NOT NECESSARILY HAVE TO BE NEW PER SE.

LIKE IT DOESN'T HAVE TO HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED LAST WEEK.

SO OUR DISTRICT LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE ALSO RECEIVES THOSE TITLES THE SAME DAY THAT THE COMMUNITY IS PROVIDED ACCESS TO THOSE TITLES.

SO THEY UPLOAD ALL AT THE SAME TIME, IF THAT MAKES SENSE.

OKAY. ONCE WE HAVE THOSE TITLES UPLOADED. AND THEN WE'VE WALKED FORWARD A COUPLE OF WEEKS THAT OUR COMMITTEE WILL MEET OUR DISTRICT LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS.

THEY ARE REQUIRED TO MEET IN PERSON. THEY GO THROUGH A SERIES OF VOTING PROCESSES AND THEY ASK QUESTIONS.

IT'S VERY SIMILAR TO WHAT WE WOULD ASSOCIATE WITH A BOARD MEETING. THEN AT THE END OF THAT MEETING, THEY TAKE A VOTE ON IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND THAT LIST TO THE SCHOOL BOARD OR NOT.

ONCE THAT THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE HAS RECEIVED THOSE LIST OF MATERIALS AND THEN THEY HAVE RECOMMENDED THEM TO THE BOARD, THAT'S WHERE YOU GUYS GET THE LIST. SO YOU'RE YOU GUYS ARE DOWN HERE IN THE MIDDLE FIFTH NUMBER FIVE DOES NOT MEAN YOU'RE NOT IMPORTANT.

IT JUST MEANS THAT A LOT OF THINGS HAVE HAPPENED PRIOR TO YOU GUYS RECEIVING THAT LIST.

ONCE YOU GUYS HAVE RECEIVED THAT LIST, YOU TAKE ACTION AT YOUR BOARD MEETING AND WE'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THAT.

IN THE PAST, FRISCO ISD LIBRARY SERVICES DEPARTMENT HAS CONDUCTED RECONSIDERATIONS WHEN WE'VE RECEIVED CHALLENGES.

AND THEN IF THE COMPLAINANT WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION OR ANOTHER REVIEW THAT WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE ITS WAY TO THE BOARD, DEPENDING ON THE APPEALS PROCESS. BUT NOW YOU GUYS WILL BE MAKING AN ACTION OR TAKING AN ACTION ON THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE'S DECISION ON THAT RECONSIDERATION.

THE LIBRARY SERVICES DEPARTMENT IS NOT NECESSARILY THE DECISION MAKER ON THAT.

THE PROCESS FOR WHICH PARENTS CAN TAKE TO RECONSIDER A LIBRARY MATERIAL IS NOT NECESSARILY A LIKE.
