WE HAD A MEETING OF THE TEACHING AND LEARNING COMMITTEE, WHERE WE CONTINUED TO LOOK AT OUR GRADING PRACTICES, AND WE SHOULD HOPEFULLY HAVE SOME UPDATES FOR THE FULL BOARD.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY, DOCTOR FIORE? MARCH. MAYBE APRIL.

I APOLOGIZE. WE'RE LOOKING AT APRIL IS A GOOD TIMELINE, POTENTIALLY, BUT WE'LL GET THAT ALL NAILED DOWN SOON.

YES, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. THE OTHER THING I WANTED TO SHARE IS I HAD THE CHANCE TO GO WITH MY DAUGHTER AND SEE THE FRISCO HIGH SCHOOL PRODUCTION OF LEGALLY BLOND, AND IT WAS IT WAS FANTASTIC. WE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED IT.

WE HAVE SUCH GREAT FINE ARTS PROGRAMS HERE IN FRISCO ISD, AND IT WAS NICE TO GET A NIGHT OUT, VISIT ANOTHER CAMPUS AND SEE THE TALENTED STUDENTS.

AND THEY DID HAVE AN ACTUAL REAL DOG IN THE SHOW.

THAT WAS KIND OF FUN. I FIGURED THEY WERE GOING TO USE A STUFFED ANIMAL, BUT IT WAS A REAL DOG.

SO BRUISER WAS PLAYED BY AN ACTUAL DOG AND IT WAS FUN AND THE OTHER THING I LEARNED WHEN I WENT, I ENDED UP SITTING NEXT TO THE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR FOR THE SHOW, AND I LEARNED THAT THE STUDENTS WERE REALLY RUNNING THE SHOW.

I ASSUMED THAT THE TEACHERS WERE KIND OF RUNNING IT AND THE STUDENTS WERE SORT OF ASSISTING, BUT SHE WAS SITTING THERE THE WHOLE TIME SHE HAD HER PHONE IN CASE THEY NEEDED HER.

BUT SHE SAID THEY DO THE WHOLE THING. THEY HANDLE ANYTHING THAT COMES UP IF THERE'S ANY ISSUES.

SO I LEARNED SOMETHING AND IT WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE.

SO I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THAT. THANK YOU, MRS. SALAS. OH, SORRY. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF VISITING TRENT ON THEIR TEN YEAR CELEBRATION FOR BEING OPEN FOR TEN YEARS.

IT WAS REALLY AMAZING TO SEE THEIR STAFF COME OUT AND CELEBRATE THAT IN THE COMMUNITY, AND IT WAS REALLY NICE TO HEAR THE PRINCIPAL SAY THEY HAD MANY EDUCATORS THAT WERE IN THAT BUILDING THAT OPENED IT AND HAD STILL BEEN THERE, SO I REALLY APPRECIATED AND ENJOYED THAT.

MR. PONANGI. YEAH, I ECHO WITH MISS SALAS ABOUT THE 10TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY.

I SEE SOME EMOJIS HERE, SO IT'S GOOD TO SEE. AND IT WAS A GREAT CELEBRATION AND THE OTHER ONE IS ABOUT THE PEP RALLY, COMMUNITY PEP RALLY, WHICH HAPPENED ON SATURDAY.

IT WAS NOT THE NORMAL ONE THAT WE HAVE IN THE LIKE THE PARADE.

IT WAS DIFFERENT, BUT A BIG SHOUT OUT TO ALL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL BANDS WHO WERE PRESENT THERE.

THEY DID AN AWESOME JOB, AND THE THIRD ONE THAT I WANTED TO MENTION IS THAT I HAD A CHANCE TO VISIT THE CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL TODAY, AND THEN SIT WITH THE STUDENTS WHO ARE PART OF THE INCUBATOR.

EDU. SOME OF THEIR IDEAS ARE REALLY AMAZING. BIG SHOUT OUT TO TOMMY THOMPSON, WHO IS LEADING IT AT CENTENNIAL,

AND I OFFERED SOME HELP. WHATEVER I CAN DO FROM MY SIDE, FROM DIGITAL MARKETING AND THEN, YOU KNOW, CONNECTING THEM WITH THE DEVELOPERS FOR THE APPS AND OTHER THINGS.

BUT WHAT REALLY IS VERY INSPIRING IS THAT, YOU KNOW, THE PROJECTS THAT THEY HAVE TAUGHT ARE, YOU KNOW, SO FAR AHEAD AND VERY RELEVANT AT THE SAME TIME TOO.

SO I JUST WANTED TO LET THAT KNOW. THANK YOU, MR. HILL. I'LL ECHO MR. PONANGI COMMENTS ON THE PEP RALLY.

THIS IS THE ANNUAL CITY PARADE THAT BECAUSE MAIN STREET IS A DISASTER AT THE MOMENT THAT THEY HAVE MOVED TO FRISCO ROUGHRIDERS THIS PAST YEAR, WHO KNOWS WHAT WILL BE NEXT YEAR? I ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO ATTEND.

I THINK SPECIAL KUDOS FOR THIS EVENT, WHICH IS KIND OF A JOINT CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT EVENT.

THE DISTRICT DID A LOT OF HEAVY LIFTING FOR THIS EVENT, PARTICULARLY THE FINE ARTS DEPARTMENTS, THE BANDS OF ALL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, THE CHEERLEADING GROUPS.

THANK YOU, MISS ALICE AND HONESTLY, THEY WERE A MAIN DRIVER IN PULLING THIS EVENT OFF IN VERY SHORT ORDER AND ASHLEY SIGN. THANK YOU. PRESIDENT DAVIS OF THE FRISCO EDUCATION FOUNDATION AND SO THE POINT BEING IS THE DISTRICT AND ITS DIFFERENT PIECES REALLY PUT A LOT OF WORK INTO THIS.

AND SO I WANT TO SAY KUDOS TO THE FBF THE SIGN.

ALL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL BANDS CHEERLEADERS. WITHOUT THEM, THIS FUNCTION WOULD NOT HAVE EVER GOTTEN OFF THE GROUND AND SO KUDOS TO THEM ON THAT.

WE ALSO HAD WITHIN THE IT WAS A BUSY MONTH, BUT IN THE PAST MONTH WE HAD THE LEGISLATIVE LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE MEET WITH WAS ABOUT A WEEK AGO, AND WE HAD EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE AND WE HAD PRETTY MUCH ALL OF OUR REPS, MOST OF OUR REPS ONE OF OUR STATE SENATORS IN ATTENDANCE SPEAKING TO US THERE IS A LOT GOING ON THERE.

THEY ARE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF WHAT WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE A VERY ENLIGHTENING LEGISLATIVE SESSION THAT IS STILL YET TO BE DETERMINED. ALL OF YOU ALL OUT THERE STILL HAVE A VOICE.

AND WE, ON BEHALF OF THE DISTRICT, IN FACT KIM SMITH AND OTHERS ARE THERE IN AUSTIN AS WE SPEAK RIGHT NOW.

THAT'S WHY THEY'RE NOT HERE AND SO THEY ARE THERE ON OUR BEHALF AND CERTAINLY IF THERE ARE ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU, WHATEVER THEY ARE, THEN THERE'S A RANGE OF THEM.

PLEASE SPEND THE TIME NOW TO LOOK INTO THAT AND LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD AND THEN THE LAST THING I WANT TO SAY IS VERY QUICKLY, WE ARE IN REGIONALS AND NOW ON STATE TWO IN A COUPLE BIG THINGS WITHIN THE DISTRICT.

MR. MCCLENDON, I THINK YOU SENT OUT A MESSAGE EARLIER TO THIS EFFECT, BUT FRISCO HAS EXCELLENT SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS AND ALSO EXCELLENT WRESTLING PROGRAMS AND BOTH OF THOSE, IF YOU CAN ADD A LITTLE COLOR FOR ME, I'D APPRECIATE IT.

BUT I THINK BOTH OF THOSE ARE GOING ON TO STATE AS WE SPEAK.

YEAH, YOU'RE EXACTLY RIGHT. SO STATE WRESTLING STARTS THIS WEEK DOWN IN AUSTIN OR DOWN IN HOUSTON.

SO THAT'LL BE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AND THEN 4A STATE SWIM WILL TAKE PLACE THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY DOWN IN SAN ANTONIO AND THEN 5A SWIM WILL TAKE PLACE NEXT WEEK AND ALSO AT THE SAME TIME, WE HAVE ALL OF OUR GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAMS WHO ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS STARTING OFF TONIGHT.

SO A VERY BUSY WEEK, A COUPLE OF WEEKS IN ATHLETICS AND OUR STUDENTS ARE PERFORMING AWESOME AS USUAL.

YEAH. SO FRISCO HAS A LOT TO BE PROUD OF IN THAT REGARD AND JUST GET OUT THERE AND SUPPORT THEM WHERE YOU CAN.

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH, A TIME TO HONOR AND CELEBRATE THE RICH CONTRIBUTIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF AFRICAN AMERICANS THROUGHOUT HISTORY.

IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT ON THE STRUGGLES FOR EQUALITY, JUSTICE, AND RECOGNITION FACED BY BLACK INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES.

FROM THE TRAILBLAZING EFFORTS OF FIGURES LIKE HARRIET TUBMAN AND DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR TO THE CULTURAL IMPACT OF ARTISTS, WRITERS AND ACTIVISTS. THIS MONTH REMINDS US OF THE RESILIENCE AND STRENGTH WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY.

LET US CELEBRATE THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ACKNOWLEDGE THE ONGOING JOURNEY TOWARD EQUITY AND INCLUSION.

I WON'T MENTION NAMES AND JUST CONTINUE TO TALK ABOUT HOW GOOD THEY WERE AND HOW MUCH THEY HELPED AND IF MANY PEOPLE WE HAVE A LOAD OF SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS IN OUR DISTRICTS, AND SOMETIMES IT'S REALLY CHALLENGING ON THE PARENTS AND THE PEOPLE AROUND, AND WE HAVE PROFESSIONALS IN OUR DISTRICT THAT ARE JUST MAKING LIFE A LOT EASIER ON THESE PARENTS AND ON THE LEARNING OF THESE STUDENTS AND SO THIS PERSON JUST I COULDN'T GET OFF THE PHONE.

THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT TAMARA FIRE SO MUCH. SO I JUST WANTED TO GIVE HER A SHOUT OUT, TELL HER GREAT JOB.

DOCTOR FIORE. THANK YOU. TONIGHT WE WILL BE CELEBRATING STUDENTS THAT RECENTLY ACHIEVED THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE COMPOSITE SCORE ON A SINGLE SAT OR ACT EXAM EACH YEAR. AS YOU ALL KNOW, MILLIONS OF STUDENTS TAKE THE SAT AND THE ACT IN LESS THAN 1% ACHIEVE THE TOP SCORES. THE SAT IS MADE UP OF THREE MAIN SECTIONS MATH, EVIDENCE BASED READING AND WRITING, AND THEN THE MATH SECTION IS SCORED ON A SCALE OF 200 TO 800, WHILE THE EVIDENCE BASED READING AND WRITING SECTIONS ARE COMBINED INTO ONE SCORE ON A SCALE OF 200 TO 800. TOTAL SAT SCORES RANGE FROM 400 TO 1600.

THE ACT CONSISTS OF TESTS IN ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, READING AND SCIENCE, SCORED ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 36.

A STUDENT'S COMPOSITE SCORE IS THE AVERAGE OF THE FOUR TEST SCORES.

THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE COMPOSITE SCORE ON THE ACT IS A 36.

THIS IS QUITE THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF OUR VERY BRIGHT STUDENTS THAT WE'LL BE HONORING TONIGHT.

AND FOR ALL OF THEIR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION, MR. KRISHNA SHETTY, OUR ADVANCED ACADEMICS COORDINATOR, IS AT THE PODIUM NOW AND HE WILL BE HONORING THE STUDENTS AT THIS TIME AND I JUST WANT TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE STUDENTS ON THEIR AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT.

SHE PLANS TO STUDY BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, LIKELY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN.

FIRST, I WANT YOU TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CHRISTIE ELEMENTARY. I DID JUST MOVE THERE THIS YEAR, AND CHRISTIE HAS STOLEN MY HEART. JUST WHEN THE FIRST FEW MINUTES OF WALKING THE CAMPUS WITH MISS DODD LAST YEAR TO MEET THE CAMPUS STUDENTS AND STAFF, CHRISTIE OPENED ITS DOORS IN 1999 WHEN FRISCO ISD LOOKED VERY DIFFERENT AND HAS DONE NOTHING BUT CONTINUE TO EVOLVE AND PROGRESS. AS OUR STUDENT BODY HAS CHANGED AND OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS HAVE ADJUSTED.

IN 2020, WE WERE REMODELED AND THAT'S WHERE WE GOT THE BENEFIT OF HAVING LIKE STEM SPACES BUILT INTO OUR BLUEPRINT OF OUR REDESIGN. MISS A LOT. WHEN YOU CAME TO TAYLOR LAST YEAR, YOU GOT TO SEE WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO ESTABLISH IN A CAMPUS THAT HAD NOT HAD THAT REMODEL.

SO I'M EXCITED TO BE AT CHRISTIE. I'VE GOT THAT OPPORTUNITY IN SPACE THAT WE'RE TRYING TO CREATE THERE THAT MANY SCHOOLS ARE TRYING TO CREATE.

WE ARE ONE OF TWO DUAL LANGUAGE CAMPUSES, WHICH MEANS OUR STUDENTS LEARN EVERY DAY.

WE HAVE MONOLINGUAL STUDENTS LEARNING JUST LIKE ANY STUDENT IN FRISCO ISD AND THEN WE HAVE OUR BILINGUAL STUDENTS THAT ARE GOING THROUGH OUR PRE-K THROUGH FIVE CURRICULUM. AND THE GOAL AND PLAN IS FOR THEM TO LEAVE FRISCO ISD, LEAVE CHRISTIE ELEMENTARY BILINGUAL, BILITERATE AND BICULTURAL IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH.

WE HAVE A PRE-K PROGRAM, AN SLC PROGRAM, AND WE HAVE THREE DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONAL MODELS OCCURRING IN OUR CAMPUS AT ONE GIVEN TIME.

SO WE ALSO HAVE THE HIGHEST ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENT BASED GROUP AT CHRISTIE ELEMENTARY AND 18% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION. IT'S A VERY UNIQUE CAMPUS WITH A LOT OF LOVE AND A LOT OF NEED SITTING IN IT AND SO WE HAVE TO BE VERY CREATIVE TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO WALK ALONGSIDE EVERY OTHER STUDENT AND EVERY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL.

WE ARE NOT FIT WITHIN A SINGLE FEEDER PATTERN BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS COME TO OUR BILINGUAL PROGRAM.

THEY'RE FROM ALL OVER THE DISTRICT, AND THEY WILL LEAVE US TO ALL THE DIFFERENT MIDDLE SCHOOLS.

ONE MORE REASON IS A PRIORITY FOR US TO CREATE THAT FUTURE READY ABILITY TO WALK INTO ANY TYPE INSTRUCTIONAL SETTING, BECAUSE OUR FUTURE BOUND IS MIDDLE SCHOOL, SO THEY ARE EQUIPPED AND PREPARED FOR THEIR NEXT STAGE OF EDUCATION.

SO IN OUR IDEA LAB IS A SPACE WHERE WE CAN TAKE THAT HOLISTIC STUDENT DEVELOPMENT.

WE DO IT EVERY DAY, IN EVERY CLASS, IN EVERY WAY.

BUT THAT IDEA LAB IS JUST ONE WAY THAT WE CAN BRING OUR KIDS TOGETHER AND FOCUS ON FUTURE READY SKILLS, SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING, AND OUR CURRICULUM ALL IN ONE LESSON, LIKE A 30 MINUTE LAB SPACE EXPERIENCE.

THE IDEA LAB IS REALLY THE BEAUTIFUL COLLABORATIVE EFFORT OF OUR DIGITAL LEARNING COACH, OUR SCHOOL COUNSELOR, AND OUR GRADE LEVEL TEACHERS. FEATURES. THEY COME TOGETHER TO COLLABORATE ON THE FUTURE READY SKILLS, THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING SKILLS AND THE CURRICULUM FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE STUDENT.

EACH MONTH IN OUR IDEA LAB, THERE IS A FOCUS.

FRISCO ISD HAS A CHARACTER TRAIT FOCUS FOR THE MONTH ACROSS THE DISTRICT, SO WE ALIGN OUR IDEA LAB WITH THOSE CHARACTER TRAITS,

AND THEN WE TAKE THE FUTURE READY LEARNER PROFILE SKILLS AND MATCH THOSE WITH WHAT MAKES THE MOST SENSE, WHAT ALIGNS WELL. FOR EXAMPLE, THIS MONTH OF FEBRUARY IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND RESPONDING.

SO WHEN OUR STUDENTS GO TO OUR LABS THIS MONTH, THEY'LL BE TAUGHT AND FOCUSED ON THOSE TWO SKILLS AS THEY'RE WORKING TOGETHER AND THEY'RE DIRECTLY TOLD, THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE WORKING ON. THIS IS HOW WE'RE TALKING TO OUR KIDS ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS TO BE FUTURE READY, WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A GOOD CHARACTER IN OUR CLASSROOMS AND IN OUR COMMUNITY. SO THIS IS KIND OF AN KIND OF EXAMPLE OF A CHALLENGE WE CREATE, NOT WE. I DON'T DO ANY OF THIS. I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE ANY CREDIT FROM THIS.

OUR TEAM CREATES STEM CHALLENGES THAT CONNECT TO EITHER CURRENT LIKE HOLIDAYS, SOMETHING HAPPENING IN THE COMMUNITY.

IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, WE LEARN A LOT ABOUT HOLIDAYS AND TRADITIONS AND THIS HAPPENED TO BE IN OCTOBER.

THEY WERE CREATING A BROOM TO PUT SPIDERS ON AND HOW MANY SPIDERS? SPIDERS THEY COULD PUT ON IT AND SO WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING, THEY'RE INNOVATING, THEY'RE DESIGNING, THEY'RE SHARING THE IDEAS WITH PARTNERS.

THEY'RE TRYING EACH OTHER'S IDEAS. THEY'RE DECIDING WHOSE IDEA THEY'RE GOING TO TRY IN THAT TIME.

AND THOSE TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS AND DIGITAL LEARNING COACH ARE WALKING AROUND COACHING THEM THROUGH THE PROCESS, NOT THE PRODUCT, BUT THE PROCESS. AFTER THEY HAVE DESIGNED THEIR CREATIONS, THE BEST PART, OR ONE OF THE GREATEST PARTS OF THE LAB FOR ME, IS THAT THEY WILL THEN REFLECT ON WHAT THEY DID.

THEY GET TO WALK EACH OTHER'S DESIGNS, SEE HOW OTHER PEOPLE, HOW OTHER STUDENTS USE THE EXACT SAME MATERIALS IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

AND IF WE POP OPEN THESE GUIDED REFLECTION QUESTIONS.

OH, YOU DON'T HAVE I CAN'T VERIFY. I'M MEGAN DEWOLF.

SOME OF THE GUIDING QUESTIONS THAT THEY REFLECT ON ARE WAS I GOOD GROUP MEMBER TODAY? DID I LISTEN TO OTHER PEOPLE'S IDEAS OR ONLY WANT TO DO MY OWN IDEAS? SO WE'RE STARTING AT THE VERY BASIC LEVEL, GETTING THAT SELF-AWARENESS BUILT WITHIN OUR CHILDREN.

AND THEN THIS IS WHERE THE CURRICULUM TIES IN.

SO THE INQUIRY BASED LEARNING CURRICULUM WE HAVE IN SCIENCE THIS YEAR HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.

LOTS OF HANDS ON LEARNING ACTIVITIES. SO AN EXAMPLE OF HOW THE PROJECTS KIND OF COME TOGETHER IN ONE IS STUDENTS WERE LEARNING ABOUT FORCE AND MOTION.

THESE PICTURES ARE FROM THE CURRENT CURRICULUM. THEY ARE EXPLORING THE MATERIALS, DOING INQUIRY BASED LESSONS AND THEN WHEN THAT KIND OF UNIT CLUSTER CLOSED, THEY WENT TO THE STEM, THE IDEA LAB AND A STEM CHALLENGE WAS CREATED AROUND THIS TEK AND THEN BUILT IN THAT FEATURE, WRITING THAT CHARACTER TRAIT TO ALSO BUILD INTO THEIR LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

WE ALL HAVE TIME MANAGEMENT IN OUR JOBS, RIGHT? AND SO THERE THEY HAD TO MAKE A DECISION. WE HAVE THIS MUCH TIME AND THIS MANY IDEAS.

WHICH OF OUR IDEAS WILL FIT INTO THIS AMOUNT OF TIME? SO THAT'S JUST ONE QUICK EXAMPLE. SORRY, I DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO PLAY RIGHT WHEN I TURNED IT, EVEN THOUGH I KNEW IT WOULD. I'M SORRY. YEAH, WE DID THE EASIEST IDEAS WE COULD THINK OF.

OKAY, SO DID Y'ALL GIVE UP? NO. NO, Y'ALL KEPT WORKING TO THE VERY END.

SO GOOD LIFE LESSON FROM HER. WHEN WE THINK ABOUT WHAT WE'RE DOING TO GET OUR STUDENTS READY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL OR WHAT THAT IDEA LAB IS HELPING THEM TO BE ABLE TO DO IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THEY'RE GETTING PREPARED TO BE COLLABORATIVE IN THEIR MATH STATIONS, IN ELEMENTARY TO COMPLETE TASKS AND SHARE PROJECTS, WHICH IS WHERE WE GIVE THEM A PROBLEM.

AND THEY THINK THROUGH BEFORE WE'VE TAUGHT THEM WHAT THAT SKILL IS.

THEY THINK THROUGH. THEY GET CREATIVE. THEY SOLVE IT FOR THEMSELVES FIRST.

THEY LEARN THEIR MISCONCEPTIONS, AND THEN WE TEACH THROUGH ALL OF THAT.

BOOK CLUBS, GROUP PROJECTS, PRESENTATIONS, INQUIRY LESSONS, SECONDARY.

WE'RE BUILDING THOSE TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS THAT SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING BASIC ENGINEERING CONCEPTS, THEIR SELF-DISCOVERY OF STRENGTHS AND INTERESTS, THEIR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT.

BECAUSE WITHIN EVERY GROUP, FROM PRE-K ILL THEY LEAVE US, NATURAL LEADERS EMERGE AND NATURAL FOLLOWERS FOLLOW.

AND SOMETIMES THEY HAVE TO COMPETE FOR THOSE POSITIONS.

SOMETIMES THEY MIGHT BE THE NATURAL LEADER, AND THE NEXT TIME THEY MIGHT BE THE NATURAL FOLLOWER AND SO THEY LEARN THAT ABOUT THEMSELVES AND WHERE THEY FEEL CONFIDENT AND WHERE THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE STEPPING BACK AND LETTING SOMEONE ELSE LEAD.

AND THE RESULT IS A LEARNER WHO IS NOT ONLY ACADEMICALLY PREPARED FOR OUR FUTURE, BUT ALSO POSSESSES A SET OF SKILLS THAT ENABLES THEM TO EMBRACE CHALLENGES, COLLABORATE, INNOVATE, COMMUNICATE, CONTRIBUTE, AND RESPOND TO WHATEVER THEIR FUTURE HOLDS.

SO WHAT WE'RE ASKING FOR THE BOARD TO DO TONIGHT IS APPROVE THE DISTRICT JOINING MULTIDISTRICT LITIGATION THAT'S GOING ON AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL TO HELP SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AS WELL AS SOME OTHER PLAINTIFFS, RECOVER DAMAGES THAT HAVE WE'VE INCURRED AS A RESULT OF MENTAL HEALTH HARMS THAT HAVE BEEN CAUSED TO YOUTH DUE TO SOCIAL MEDIA USE, AND THE ARGUMENT IS THAT THE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES HAVE KNEW ABOUT THE DAMAGES THAT WERE BEING DONE TO STUDENTS OR CHILDREN, AND CHOSE TO PUT PROFITS OVER THE NEEDS OF THEIR CUSTOMERS.

WE ARE ASKING TO GET APPROVAL FROM THE BOARD TO JOIN THAT LAWSUIT, AND WE WOULD DO IT THROUGH A CONTINGENCY FEE PROCESS, WHICH MEANS WE DON'T ACTUALLY OUTPUT ANY FUNDS OF THE DISTRICT AND WOULD ONLY PAY FOR LEGAL SERVICES THAT WE'VE UTILIZED THROUGH THE RECOVERY.

SURE. SO BACK IN 2021, YOU MIGHT RECALL THAT THERE WERE WHISTLEBLOWERS WHO CAME OUT FROM VARIOUS LARGE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES AND THEY PRESENTED EVIDENCE TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THAT THE COMPANIES KNEW THEIR ALGORITHMS WERE CAUSING MENTAL HEALTH HARMS TO ALL OF THEIR CUSTOMERS, BUT PARTICULARLY THOSE ALGORITHMS WERE HARMFUL TO YOUNG PEOPLE.

AND AS FOLLOWING THAT TESTIMONY THERE WAS A LOT OF ACTION ON CAPITOL HILL IN, IN WASHINGTON.

THEY CALLED UPON CEOS OF VARIOUS LARGE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES TO GIVE TESTIMONY.

AND THEN FOLLOWING THAT TESTIMONY THAT TOOK PLACE IN 2024, THERE WAS ACTUALLY PROPOSED LEGISLATION TO TO ADD SOME PROTECTIONS FOR CHILDREN, SPECIFICALLY IN CONNECTION WITH SOCIAL MEDIA.

UNFORTUNATELY, THAT LEGISLATION DID NOT GET PAST THE SENATE AND SO RIGHT NOW, THERE'S STILL THE CONCERN THAT THERE ARE ONGOING HARMS FOR YOUTH IN THE UNITED STATES AND THIS SUIT IS DESIGNED TO ADDRESS THOSE HARMS BY CALLING OUT THESE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES THAT ARE CAUSING HARM TO OUR STUDENTS AND ESSENTIALLY MAKING THEM PAY FOR THE DAMAGES THAT WE HAVE ALREADY INCURRED AS A SCHOOL DISTRICT DUE TO THOSE PUBLIC HEALTH HARMS THAT AFFECT OUR STUDENTS, AS WELL AS ALL STUDENTS ACROSS THE NATION AND SO THIS LAWSUIT IS DESIGNED TO DO THAT.

THE TYPES OF EXPENSES THAT THE DISTRICT HAS ALREADY OUTPUT IN RESPONSE TO THESE MENTAL HEALTH HARMS TO OUR YOUTH INCLUDE ADDITIONAL STAFFING THAT WE'VE

BUT WE HAVE EXPENDED QUITE A LOT OF MONEY TO HELP OUR STUDENTS.

BECAUSE WE MEET THE STUDENTS NEEDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER WE RECEIVE ADDITIONAL FUNDING.

BUT THIS WOULD HELP TO COMPENSATE US FOR SOME OF THOSE LARGE EXPENSES THAT THE DISTRICT HAS ALREADY OUTPUT TO HELP OUR STUDENTS WITH THE MENTAL HEALTH HARMS THAT COME ALONG WITH SOCIAL MEDIA USE. MISTER LOWE, CAN WE QUANTIFY OR HAVE WE QUANTIFIED THE DAMAGE THAT'S BEEN DONE TO THE DISTRICT AS A RESULT OF SOCIAL MEDIA? WE CAN CERTAINLY DO THAT.

SO WHAT WE WILL DO AS PART OF THE LAWSUIT IS GATHER DATA TO PROVIDE TO THE ATTORNEYS WHO ARE WHO ARE REPRESENTING US AND WE'LL LOOK AT DATA THAT WE'VE REPORTED TO THE STATE ALREADY ABOUT A LOT OF THE DISCIPLINARY ISSUES THAT COME ALONG WITH SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND WE'LL ALSO PROVIDE FINANCIAL INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT WE'VE EXPENDED TO HELP COVER THOSE. SO ECONOMIC RELIEF IS GREAT. OBVIOUSLY THERE'S A COST ASSOCIATED WITH US AS A DISTRICT ADDRESSING SOME OF THESE ITEMS, BUT HOW ABOUT JUST FROM A PRACTICE COURSE OF CONDUCT GOING FORWARD? SO OBVIOUSLY THE PRIMARY GOAL IS NOT JUST TO RECOVER FUNDS THAT WE'VE EXPENDED, BUT TO HELP CHANGE THEB EHAVIOR OF THESE COMPANIES BY GIVING THEM ESSENTIALLY THE CARROT VERSUS THE STICK. THIS IS A STICK TO HELP ENCOURAGE THEM TO CHANGE THE WAY THAT THEY'VE PROGRAMED THEIR ALGORITHMS, SO THAT THE STUDENTS ARE NOT GOING TO BE HARMED AS MUCH, SO THAT THERE WOULD BE PROTECTIONS IN PLACE FOR CHILDREN TO HELP REDUCE THE MENTAL HEALTH HARMS THAT COME ALONG WITH SOCIAL MEDIA USE. SO I WANT TO PIGGYBACK JUST A LITTLE BIT OFF OF WHAT MR. HILL JUST ASKED. AS IT RELATES TO STUDENTS. I UNDERSTAND WE'LL BE RECOVERING SOME OF THE FUNDS THAT WE'VE BEEN USING TO PREVENT SOME OF THE CHALLENGES THAT WE'VE FACED AND OTHER DISTRICTS ARE PROBABLY STILL FACING.

BUT I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO KNOW, AS FAR AS THE STUDENTS ARE CONCERNED, HOW WOULD HOW IS THIS A WIN FOR OUR CHILDREN? SO THIS WOULD GIVE US FUNDS TO HELP SUPPORT THOSE KIDS AND THE MENTAL HEALTH HARMS THAT THEY'VE ALREADY SUFFERED.

SO WE ALREADY ARE, OR ALREADY HAVE INCREASED THE NUMBER OF STAFF WHO HELP DEAL WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THROUGH OUR COUNSELING DEPARTMENT.

WE'VE ALSO PUT IN DISCIPLINARY SUPPORTS THAT DEAL A LOT WITH CYBERBULLYING AND BULLYING INITIATIVES, THINGS LIKE THAT. SO WE WOULD BE ABLE TO BUILD UPON THOSE PROGRAMS IF WE WERE ABLE TO RECOVER FUNDS TO HELP US GET THOSE DONE.

I DO, I KNOW THAT YOU PROBABLY DON'T HAVE THIS INFORMATION NOW, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHAT MANDATES WE CURRENTLY ARE HELD TO BY THE STATE AND POTENTIALLY FEDERAL AND WHAT FUNDING WE RECEIVE CURRENTLY TO SUPPORT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE HAVING TO SPEND ADDITIONAL RESOURCES ON. BUT THOSE MANDATES THAT WERE IN THAT PROPOSED FEDERAL LEGISLATION DID NOT COME WITH ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR THE DISTRICT.

AND SO IF WE WERE TO HAVE TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL LEGISLATION, WHICH IS LIKELY TO BE PASSED IN THE FUTURE, THIS IS A BIPARTISAN ISSUE THAT'S WELL SUPPORTED ON ALL POLITICAL, ALL POLITICAL FRONTS.

THEN WE WOULD HAVE ADDITIONAL COSTS TO GET IN COMPLIANCE WITH THOSE REQUIREMENTS THAT GO ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT WE'RE ALREADY DOING TO SUPPORT STUDENTS.
